R10 CASPIAN TERN
The Caspian tern, the largest of its kind,
has a heavy coral-coloured bill that makes
it easily identifiable and a fitting inclusion
in the 2017 colour coin range, its scientific
name ‘Hydroprogne caspia’ and the
denomination ‘R10’.
R10 BLUE CRANE
The R10 depicts the dynamic blue
crane, South Africa’s national bird,
with its distinctive feathers stretched
upward. The bird is seen in striking
blue on the reverse, with the bird’s
scientific name ‘Grus paradisea’, and
the denomination ‘R10’.
R5 STARFISH LILY
The reverse of this R5 coin features
the startfish lily, an alien-looking flower
with its frilly edges (this flower could
easily be mistaken for an exotic sea
creature) with the flower’s scientific
name ‘Ferraria Crispa’ and the
denomination ‘R5’.
R5 YELLOW WINE CUP
This R5 coin depicts the yellow wine
cup against the background of the
renosterveld. The yellow wine cup,
which blooms in early spring, is
depicted on the reverse with the
flower’s scientific name ‘Geissorhiza
darlingensis’, the denomination ‘R5’.
