Recognised by its very large, downwardly curved yellow beak, the southern yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) is an omnivore that mainly feeds on the ground. Its diet consists of small vertebrates, invertebrates, seeds and, occasionally, fruit. The birds are monogamous and live in small family groups or breeding pairs. They are sociable and have a very distinctive clucking call. Once a bird starts calling, the entire group will often join in, creating a discord of sound.

The reverse of this R10 sterling-silver 1oz coin portrays the southern yellow-billed hornbill in the open mopane scrub at a water source in the central region of the Kruger National Park.
